Day 3.... From Belle Fourche, SD

I had a good nights sleep in the tent, and was up early. John and I went for a late morning ride down Spearfish Canyon and back. The traffic is still light for a pre rally week. The campground is still lightly populated. That will change in the next few days.
I snapped a few pictures going down the canyon.

John and I stopped at Cheyenne Crossing for lunch. Good burgers and good pulled pork.
We returned to camp to wait for Garth to arrive from Castlegar BC. We were surprised to see him pull up with his bike on a trailer. He brought his wife, Ronni, with him.

After they got their tent set up, they went off to the store for a few supplies. While they were gone it started to rain. I spent most of the afternoon napping in my tent listening to the rain and thunder. The temps dropped nicely after the rain started.
My view most of the afternoon..... The first one's for you Bob...

When the rain cleared, the sky was beautiful. The sunset was fantastic!

Someday I'll figure out how to shoot a picture of the sun. It was an intense orange color. I just couldn't capture that image...

  1. Bummer it started to rain, but at least it cooled it off a bit.

Soon the traffic will move in and the roads will be roaring with bikes.

  2. I really enjoyed Spearfish Canyon and, actually, the whole area the last time I was there.

What kind of tent do you have?

    1. It's a Marmot 2 person. It's a little small if I have a lot of crap with me, but it packs small. The perspective is a little off in the picture. The tent is a lot lower than it looks from inside.

Your tent is very tall, as if you could stand up in it. I am honoured to be your inspiration for photo ideas. In that heat I would welcome rain too, not too much but a slight drizzle would be fine.

taking photos of the sun is very hard due to brightness. You need lots of ND filters. If you have manual mode try underexposing 5 stops or more as a starting point. Perhaps you could try a reflection from a tinted window

I notice no pasture photos. Do I presume that SD has no pastures or meadows ?

    1. Bob, the tent is no where near as tall as the photo makes it look. It's an illusion.

I'll try to take some pics of real SD pasture land. There's a bit of a drought going on so there a bit brown. Farmers are selling of their livestock because of the pasture grass shortage.

Thanks for the tips on better photos!

    1. I'm saving the green ones, kind of like you and the new boots.

  6. Erik there is nothing so relaxing as sitting in your little tent, snug and dry, listening to the rain patter on the the fly ... unless that is, it's a furry friend snuggled up beside you purring her heart out, saying "where the hell were you, never mind, I'm just glad you're back."
And Bob - The Dakotas have lots of pasture ... wonderful flat pasture, with happy, inviting, gently rolling hills (and rattlesnakes of course).
Erik, nice toes by the way (you have been hanging around Bob too long!)

    1. I'm glad you're home safe. That was a long ride!! I can't wait to get home and love up the cats...

LOL on the Bob's toes. Nancy and I get a kick out of some of the creative ways he gets his feet into his pics.
