Someone Found the Bird Feeders...

A few nights ago, someone found our bird feeders. They ate everything, the seed, the suet, and they bent the 1" steel pole like it was rope... This morning, this little guy is in our back yard eating bird food off the ground..

It's not much bigger than a large dog. Guess I'll have to look twice before walking out in the woods to get more firewood!

UPDATE..... Tonight, a MUCH larger bear was pulling at our feeders just before we went to take them in. I wasn't fast enough with the camera to get any pictures, but I'll try and photograph him if he comes around again!

  1. Looks like a mangy, starving spring bear. You probably do need to look around before venturing out into the woods.

    1. It was raining that day. It's been back a few times now. When dry, it looks much healthier.

  2. Uh, yeah...and Mama makes two. Or three. It's a whole different way of living where you are. As Richard commented, I wonder why the bear is so thin.

  3. That poor lad looks hungry. I hope the bears find better places to feed than from your bird feeder.

    1. Bears are omnivores and now that spring has arrived and the woods are coming back to life, it should be able to find plenty to eat.

  4. Don't see that sort of thing around here too often!

He may be skinny but he sure is cute.

    1. Only in Zoos Erik. The only native mammals we have are a couple of species of bat which you never see.

Closest things we've got are introduced Aussie Possums that are a major pest here. Have dodged plenty of them on the bike...

    2. I had to Google Image search Australian Possum. They do look a lot different than the opossums we have here in the U.S.. It used to be that in the U.S. opossums were thought of as more of a southern states animal. I remember the first time I saw one up here in the north. I thought it was a huge smokey colored rat. Thankfully they tend to be nocturnal, but they can still be a destructive little creature.

  5. Holy cow....er bear.

Yeah he may be cute but I reckon he could still probably rip your arms off and beat you to death with them

  6. Oooh Mama bear must have come calling too. Beware of wood cutting.
Poor thing looks hungry. Urban sprawl takes more and more of their habitat. We had BC Wildlife shoot one by our back yard one year because they'd gotten into town. Scary. Damn people didn't even tranquilize it. Poor things.

Oh and thank you for posting, I don't feel so bad about the raccoons knocking down our feeders and eating our bird seed anymore.

    1. I'm 5 miles from "town", and 25 miles from a large store. There are a few businesses in town, but a lot of them are tourism related and some of them are seasonal.

We get raccoons in the yard once in a while.

  8. I thought raccoons were bad, that brute would cause much more trouble than a couple of bandits. I brought in the feeders every night and put them out every morning for a couple of weeks to discourage them, I don't know what you'd do with bears. Maybe wear a bell and carry pepper spray when you step outside, that way they can hear dinner coming and you'll taste better by adding a little spice to their meal ;)

    1. I'm just glad they're Back Bears and not a big Grizzly!

There was a man a 100 miles or so from us that was attacked by a Black Bear that wandered into his yard. The Bear was growling at the guy's dog, and when the guy went out to call off his dog, the Bear attacked him. The wife went out with the guy's shotgun, but she didn't know how to load it. She struck the Bear in the head with it. The Bear dropped the guy and everyone ran into the house. The Bear circled the house for a long time and was looking in the windows. When the Sheriff's Deputy showed up, the Bear headed for the squad car. The Deputy shot the Bear. They hauled it off, and were going to study it to try and figure out why the Bear acted that way.

    1. That's for sure. We make sure to lock all the doors. I don't want to wake up to find a bear watching me sleep!
