The weather played a big part in Friday's ride. We were going to leave Cody, WY and ride the Chief Joseph Highway and the Beartooth Pass, but the dark clouds that hung over the top of the mountain made us change our plans. We took the "around" rather than "over" route to Red Lodge.
We passed by the site of Montana's worst underground coal mine disaster, the Smith Mine near Bear Creek.
WE rode to Red Lodge and took a short break and walked up and down the main street and checked out a few of the shops.
We were going to try and take the long way to Butte, but the black clouds south of I-90 made us change our minds, again.. So we just hammered it out on the Interstate to Butte, MT. We may stay here at the Super 8 Motel for a couple of days and use it as a base for our day rides.
The Weather Channel has said things will improve for the next few days...... Fingers crossed...

You are in such an area. Such a dramatic area. Sky all day long. And in those parts people better pay attention to the sky! I can just feel that air.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot of Red Lodge. There's a place that gets some winter!
This south western corner of Montana is very pretty. I guess that afternoon thunder storms are very common, but you can see them coming from a long ways away.
DeleteRed Lodge looks pretty "touristy". Looking forward to more MT ride reports!
ReplyDeleteRichard, Red Lodge is very touristy and close to Yellowstone
DeleteLove the last photo Erik. The mountain over shadowing the main street of the town. I love those sort of shots.
ReplyDeleteFingers still crossed for drier weather. Sounds like you found a good base camp for day rides.
ReplyDeleteOne of those signs in Red Lodge says hand made chocolates - did you partake?
It was still early, and I didn't think hand made candy would travel well so I didn't.... I suppose there really isn't a bad time for chocolate, is there?
DeleteChocolate - it's what's for breakfast! New slogan for you.
DeleteSounds like you found perfect roads - something for both of you. I love big sky country, however I never considered Butte as my favorite place but I did find a small shop to buy some copper pieces.
ReplyDeleteThere were a few roads where you looked at mountain side on one side of the road, and the tops of tall pine trees on the other...
DeleteThere was a small copper shop next to our hotel.
Sorry to post this comment on this particular entry - it is meant for your Aug. 11th entry but I didn't see a way to post comments there? There are some spectacular photos in there, particularly the ranch photo with the cows and wooden structure. Wow. I have never been to that neck of the woods before, and it is strikingly beautiful. BTW love the header image and tagline, too! Well done. Will be back to read more about your adventures!
