John and Wendie Come to visit...

...and work progresses on the utility trailer rebuild. My riding buddy, John, and his wife, Wendie, came up from St. Paul on Saturday. John brought with him a few gifts he had been making.... Gifts in the form of Oak stakes for my trailer. John was able to locate some Oak pallets, bust them apart, and salvage some nice pieces. He trimmed them to length, planned them down, and even cut notches in them. When he was finished, he had 12 pieces that were 29.5" x 2.75" x 1.75". A little hand fitting with his custom made sanding blocks and my belt sander and we're in business! I used 10 of them on the trailer and have 2 for spare parts.

Next, I need to get some 5/4" x 6" x 8' Cedar decking to use for the sides.

John works with wood and and also does custom engraving. He's very meticulous, so the pieces look like something from a furniture factory!

Last night, the 4 of us went out for dinner and had BBQ at "Famous Dave's". Nancy and I also gave them the tour of the Christmas light displays in Hayward.

Thanks John, and thank you too Wendie... You guys are the best!

  2. It is so nice when friends can get together and visit. And when they bring precious hand made farkles for your toys it gets even better.

Happy New Year to you, Nancy and the kitties.

It was a pleasure meeting up this summer and getting to ride with you too.

  3. That 'cabinetry' is the icing on this trailer's cake......it's looking like usage will be limited to very sunny, dry Sunday afternoons :) Lovely job you guys!

Happy New Year Erik and Nancy!

P.S. Will you be down for the IMS gathering on the 12th??

    1. There's no way that the trailer is going to be parked outside in bad weather. I'll have to look into a lean-to next to the garage.

I'm not sure about the show. I've made the last 3 or 4, but there's nothing I'm really shopping for this winter. If I decide to go, I'll let you know.

  4. Pallets can be such a gift! Especially oak ones! That's a great looking trailer.

Still surprising that you don't have much snow. Funny how spotty it is all over the state. You are where the big snow should be.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Yup, I have a few pallets and they sure come in handy.

Happy New Year to you too.

  5. Erik:

I've always wanted to work with wood, but the dust interfered with my darkroom, so I sold off all my equipment years ago. I think having a talented friend is better then I get to go to "Famous Dave's". We don't have them up here but I remember going to one in Bozeman, MT when we were there years ago.

You have so many places to eat around Cable. First there is the Delta Diner, then Coop mentions the Whistle Stop, and now Famous Dave's, not to mention Nancy's kitchen delights.

Happy New Year to you and Nancy

    1. Yes Bob, a skilled friend is a great thing to have. Keep in mind this is Wisconsin, there are more bars and restaurants around here than you can imagine. It seems like they are some of the only businesses open all year!

Happy New Year to you and your family!

  6. I've always thought it a shame to see such beautiful wood being used in pallets. I am glad someone recognizes its true potential and takes the time to painstakingly craft something beautiful.

    Happy New Year!
