Fall Color Photos #3

It's amazing how fast the colors change! It seems like I was just saying how slow and unorganized the change was this year. Well I'd have to say that in my neighborhood, the colors may have hit their peak a few days ago. There are still lots of great colors, but some trees are bare or almost bare. A lot depends on where you are, and what variety of trees you're looking at.

A few Maple leaves from some of the different varieties of Maples in the yard.

This is from this morning. It's just a few feet into the woods on the south side of our home...
There's a neighbor over there somewhere. Their place is about 600' away through the woods.

Looking towards the west... This is a cluster of trees that's kind of a buffer between the house and the road.

Towards the north. This was a bright red Maple tree a few days ago...

I found some aerial shots of the area around our home. It's easy to differentiate the Oaks and Maples... The 2 houses across the street from us are used a "cabins" and only occupied a few weeks a year.

Being retired has it's advantages. I've been able to spend a couple hours in the woods behind the house. Without having to cut down any of the dozen or so standing dead Oaks, I was able to find plenty of downed stuff that was off the ground and dry. It looks like I'll have to build another wood rack in the garage for more dry stuff.

  1. Yes, that certainly is a lovely bit of land. Tell me what conifers you have. Any hemlock?

    1. I'll have to start looking closer at them, but most of the coniferous trees around us are quite large and have long needles.
I've been noticing the differences in the Maple leafs. We must have several varieties in the yard. I've started to notice differences in the Oaks too.

  2. I really like that first shot of the maples on the wood. Great idea.

It must be so nice to live in the country and have your neighbors that far away.

Is Nancy enjoying her daily warming fires yet?

    1. We haven't had to start either the fireplace or the furnace yet. It gets down the the lower 40s at night, but it's been warming to near 70 during the day.

I bet it wont be long before the fireplace is used to take the chill out of the house in the morning.

  3. Erik, don't laugh at me but if I where to find such a set of colorful leaves I would dry them and put them behind glass to enjoy their beauty all year round...

    1. I'm not going to laugh.... I was wondering about preserving them too. I remember back in elementary school, we had to bring in leaves and we set them between 2 sheets of wax paper and the teacher ironed them. If I remember right, it kind of had a stained glass look to it when it was done.
I "googled" how to preserve leaves, and the wax paper method was listed, along with other ways. All the trees are pretty much bare, but I might try something with them next year.....
